30.12.2008 Dull Weekdays Ahead of Long Holidays The Ukrainian stock market followed the trends prevailing in world markets, with both liquid and second tier stocks having seen a correction. In the period from December 22 through December 26, the PFTS index declined 2.89%. The total trading turnover was $23.7 million. Stocks of Dniproenergo (DNEN – $1.93 million), Dniprospetsstal (DNSS – $1.61 million) and Zaporizhya Abrasives (ZABR – $1.24 million) were most actively traded. The latter two companies were also among the issuers that closed the week with the biggest growth of quotations, having risen by 5.6% and 6.8% respectively. Kharkivoblenergo (HAON, -20.3%), Motor Sich (MSICH, -16%) and Forum Bank (FORM, -15.8%) became top losers last week.>>> 223 Kb
23.12.2008 Pre-New-Year “Rally” World Markets
Although world’s stock indices moved in different directions all the week long, most of them still managed to close in positive territory. According to last week results, American indexes DOW JONES, NASDAQ and S&P 500 edged up 1.4%, 3.7% and 0.9% respectively, the UK’s FTSE-100 gained 0.2%, Germany’s DAX 30 rose 4.9% and Japan’s NIKKEI 500 was up 4.4%.
Ukrainian Market
Last week, the Ukrainian stock market was in festive mood, as if looking forward to New Year holidays. The PFTS index posted almost a vertical growth by 11.5%, having surpassed 300 points on Friday. Trading was also highly active, compared to the previous recent trading results, with an average daily trading turnover of more than UAH23 million. Such liquid stocks as Enakievo Steel (+38.5%), Mariupol Illych Iron and Steel Works (+52.3%), Novomoskovsk Tube Plant (+24.3%), Forum Bank (+22.8%), Alchevsk Iron&Steel Works (+18.5%) and Zakhidenergo (+16.8%) posted significant gains.>>> 173 Kb
09.12.2008 More Pessimism World Markets
Wall Street and other stock markets were trapped in a new air pocket since Monday. While Congressmen were discussing how to help US carmakers, investors were receiving more and more alarming signals. In particular, US President-elect Barack Obama warned this Sunday that the economy would get worse before it improved. Macroeconomic data released last week showed that recession was not subsiding, which proved Obama’s words.
Ukrainian Market
The Ukrainian market posted a moderate decline last week, with the PFTS index having lost 5.2%. Alongside with this, 40 most liquid stocks shed 4.3%, and second tier stocks fell by an average 0.5%. Metals were the top decliners, having fallen by an average 9.5%. Engineers suffered least of all, being down only 4.7%.>>> 165 Kb
25.11.2008 Uncertainty – a noose around stock markets’ neck World Markets
As before, stock markets felt stressed last week. Losses of the majority of world’s stock indexes were significant and hit new bear market lows. As a matter of fact, these losses “gobbled down” all the gains for the period from October 2002 to October 2007, when markets were in an uptrend. Moreover, the S&P 500 index of shares on New York Stock Exchange plunged to levels last seen in 1997. Other world stock indexes fell by an average 6-10%. Germany’s DAX-30 lost 6.5%, the UK’s FTSE-100 plummeted 10.8%, Japans NIKKEI-225 shed 6.5%, Russia’s RTS declined 9.9%, and the American indexes Dow Jones and Nasdaq were down 5.9% and 8.7% respectively.
Ukrainian Market
The Ukrainian stock market preferred to move in a sideways trend all the week, without any nosedives or take-offs. As a result, it posted a decline of only 2.6%. 40 most liquid stocks lost an average 1.1%, while first tier stocks were down 0.4%.>>> 168 Kb
